Frequently Asked Questions

CPR is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, registered with the States of Tennessee and Connecticut. We’ve been in operation since 2004, proudly rescuing 2,000+ dogs and pups each and every year. Our rescue is financially operated through our adoption fees, donations and fundraisers. Because of the extensive vet care we provide, running our rescue is very expensive. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccinations, tested for heartworms (if over 6 months of age) and if positive for heartworms, they are treated before leaving our care. While we don’t receive any government funding, we are required to comply with very strict standards set by the states of TN, CT, MA and the USDA.

Yes! We offer Open House hours at our Southbury, CT adoption center a few weekends each month. The best way to keep track of our Open House hours is via our website Event Calendar or our Facebook page. In addition to Open House hours, we schedule appointments at the adoption center upon approval of our adoption application. We also host multiple adoption events each weekend at various locations throughout Connecticut. You’ll find those details on our Event Calendar and also on our Facebook page.

We don’t require pre-approval to visit an event but we strongly recommend it to help your visit with us go smoothly, save time waiting, and generally speed up the adoption process.

The first step in the adoption process is to submit an adoption application. Our puppies adopt out VERY quickly so please don’t wait for a response to an email inquiry before submitting the application.

75% of our dogs and pups come from high kill shelters in Tennessee and Mississippi. These shelters reach out to CPR for help. If the shelters are able to adhere to our intake protocol, we are very happy to work with them. If we are contacted to help with puppies in a shelter, the mom is never left behind by CPR if she is also at the shelter.

The other 25% of our dogs and pups come from the public. We are asked to assist with personally owned unwanted adult dogs and litters of puppies. For the litters, our assistance is contingent upon the individual agreeing to the get their female dog spayed at CPR’s expense. Our main goal is not adoption. Our main goal is to end the cycle of unwanted dogs and we know the way to that is through spay/neuter. Spay/neuter is the only solution to pet overpopulation.

Because we rarely have information on the background of our pups prior to their entering our care, we are unable to provide exact birthdates, and our estimates of breed mixes are based on physical characteristics.

Because of the amount of correspondence our volunteers and staff receive daily, email is the only way we are able to keep up with the demand. Please email us at cprtransport@gmail.com.

Our adoption fee covers all of the vet work that our rescue pups receive prior to adoption. This includes age appropriate vaccinations, heartworm testing (if over 6 months) and treatment if positive for the disease, spay/neuter and any other medical care that might be necessary to get our pups ready for their new families. The adoption fee also covers transportation and vet checks plus all of the additional costs of shelter care in Tennessee and Connecticut.

There are many ways that you can help CPR save more dogs! We are always looking for new foster homes and volunteers. If you’d like to foster, or volunteer in any other way, the first step is submitting the volunteer application. Besides fostering, we need folks to walk dogs, work at adoption events, assist with promotion, social media, fundraising….people are always needed to help us help dogs. If you are a minor who is eager to volunteer, you will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult, and you will need to fill out an application together.
